Basic Function

Under the direction of the University Pastor, the part time Coordinator for Muslim life will help establish a presence for the campus Muslim community. The incumbent will help bring awareness about Islam and Muslims to the campus to create a pluralistic environment to help all students feel included on campus.

Representative Duties

Provide a visible and programmatic support to the Muslim students and Muslim community at Cal Lutheran, including organizing weekly study groups on topics, including the Qur’an, Arabic study, or Islamic theology, and organizing one or two events per semester on themes connected to Islam. E

Build and foster relationships with Muslim students at the university. E

Serve as a resource to the Muslim Student Association (MSA) at the university; serve as a resource on Muslim faith practices to the Office of Campus Ministry. E

Meet with the University Pastor twice a month for planning and communication. E

Provide counsel to those who recruit Muslim students and foster a community of inclusion for Muslim students and those of all faiths at Cal Lutheran. E

Collaborate with the Graduate Intern for Interfaith and the Interfaith Allies related
to programming events and celebrations for a multi faith audience. E

Organize celebrations of Muslim religious holidays or on Islamic themes for the campus community. E

Work with the Office of Congregational Religions to help establish connections with the local Muslim community. E

Knowledge Of

Mobilizing and organizing a community

Public speaking and community engagement

Qur’anic Arabic and the Qur’an and Hadith

Fundamentals of Islamic beliefs and practices as well as Islam in a comparative focus.

Appreciation of different religious traditions and beliefs

Mission, vision, identity and goals of California Lutheran University

University rules, regulations, policies and procedures

Interfaith dialogue and engagement techniques

Relevant computer software and technology such as: Microsoft software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Ability To

Provide leadership and support for the Muslim community at the university

Communicate both in writing and verbally to engage with diverse constituencies.

Demonstrate a commitment to interfaith dialogue and engagement.

Utilize all forms of social media as a resource tool.

Work collegially with ministry colleagues and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.

Skillfully teach and relate to students
Provide administrative oversight in the development of programs and activities.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination equivalent to: A Master’s degree in chaplaincy or a graduate degree in Islamic Studies with experience in a university setting working with diverse populations across religious and cultural differences.

Preferred Qualifications

Master of Divinity degree or Graduate Studies in Islamic/Religious Studies, or equivalent training at an Islamic seminary.

Hiring Range $17.75 to $24.00
